Subcommittee on Skill Standards for Steel Structures
Committee Overview
■Background and Objectives of the Committee
For the sustainable development of the steel structures field, it is important to organize the accumulated body of technology and knowledge, pass it on to the next generation, and provide those expected to work in the field in the future with a standard framework of the knowledge and skills they should acquire. This Subcommittee will systematize the engineering knowledge, practical experience, and other expertise required in the field of steel structures, establish skill standards, and present a model curriculum for steel structures education at universities, colleges of technology, and other institutions of higher education. Existing professional qualifications will also be investigated and taken into consideration in developing these standards. In addition, the Subcommittee will identify the knowledge, technical skills, and other competencies that young engineers in private companies should possess in order to understand the background and requirements of technical standards and independently carry out practical engineering work.
■Committee Activities
The following research and investigation activities will be conducted.
- Survey of current university curricula and training programs provided by companies
- Survey of textbook content used for inspection and diagnosis qualifications
- Survey of practices and systems overseas
- Needs assessment through questionnaires and interviews
- Survey of skill-standard frameworks in other fields
- Development of a curriculum for steel structures education at institutions of higher education
- Identification of the technical competencies required to understand, interpret, and implement technical standards in the field of steel structures
- Development of mechanisms and evaluation criteria for establishing and promoting the use of skill standards
