Subcommittee on Surface Preparation for Steel Structures

Committee Overview

【Subcommittee Name】
Subcommittee on Surface Preparation of Steel Structures

【Objectives】
Severe corrosion of steel structures exposed to atmospheric environments has been widely reported due to the deposition of salts such as airborne sea salt and deicing agents. Once severe corrosion occurs, it becomes difficult to completely remove rust containing salts during surface preparation for repainting, and many cases of premature deterioration have been reported. In addition, heavily corroded weathering steel forms a hard and dense rust layer, making it extremely difficult to restore the steel substrate using conventional surface preparation methods. Furthermore, metal spraying requires higher-quality steel surface preparation than painting, while CFRP reinforcement raises concerns about galvanic corrosion and debonding of CFRP materials due to degradation of the adhesive interface. Thus, the required performance and technical challenges associated with surface preparation are diverse.

To economically and effectively extend the service life of steel structures, it is essential to resolve the above-mentioned issues related to steel surface preparation and to ensure a level of steel substrate quality that maintains both corrosion protection performance and structural performance over the long term. Accordingly, this Committee focuses on surface preparation of existing steel structures and compiles information on the applicability, precautions, and technical issues associated with surface preparation technologies for coatings, metal spraying, weathering steel, and bonding of CFRP materials, together with the latest findings and emerging technologies.

【Priority Research Project】
The following research project was selected as a 2023 Priority Research Project of the Steel Structures Committee and was carried out.
Research Title: Materials-Chemistry Analysis of Corroded Steel for Evaluating Surface Preparation Quality

Research Overview:
Insufficient surface preparation of severely corroded areas often results in localized under-film corrosion occurring and progressing soon after repainting, and cases leading to member fracture have also been reported. To address this issue, the Committee is working to analyze steel surfaces after various surface preparation methods have been applied to severely corroded areas and to propose construction methods that ensure sufficient surface quality to prevent renewed deterioration. To achieve this objective, steel surfaces were scientifically analyzed after various surface preparation methods had been applied to severely corroded steel plates, and the quality of the prepared surfaces was quantitatively evaluated.
Following the FY2023 project, the following research has been selected as a 2024 Priority Research Project of the Steel Structures Committee and is currently being conducted.

Research Title:
Development of Equipment for a New Method of Measuring Deposited Salts on Steel Structures and Scientific Analysis for Reliability Evaluation in Practical Application

Research Overview:
Because severely corroded areas have irregular surfaces, conventional salt measurement methods such as the conductivity method and the Bresle method are difficult to apply. To address this issue, the objective is to develop equipment that can easily smooth the surface to which a Bresle patch is attached, thereby enabling salt measurement after surface preparation of areas with severe salt deposition. After development of the equipment, trial applications and test measurements will be performed on severely corroded surfaces, and anions such as Cl will be analyzed using ion chromatography.
