Subcommittee on Standard Specifications for Steel and Composite Structures: General Provisions and Design

Committee Overview

＜Background and Objectives＞
Since its establishment in 1971, the Steel Structures Committee of the Japan Society of Civil Engineers has established numerous subcommittees to conduct research and investigations on steel structures and composite structures in the field of civil engineering, thereby contributing to advances in academic knowledge and technology. Based on these achievements, the Committee established and published the “General Provisions,” “Structural Planning,” and “Design” sections of the Standard Specifications for Steel and Composite Structures in 2007, followed by the “Seismic Design,” “Construction,” and “Maintenance” sections.
The environment surrounding civil engineering structures is constantly changing due to increasingly severe natural disasters, global warming, and other factors. Accordingly, the performance required of civil engineering structures and their design methods also continue to evolve. In order to respond to these changes while efficiently developing and maintaining economical and high-quality civil engineering structures, specifications issued by JSCE must incorporate the latest knowledge and technologies. For this reason, the specifications published by the Steel Structures Committee are, in principle, revised at appropriate intervals. The “General Provisions and Design” sections of the Standard Specifications for Steel and Composite Structures underwent their second revision in fiscal year 2022 and were subsequently published.
With the goal of carrying out a third revision in 2030, the “Subcommittee on General Provisions and Design of the Standard Specifications for Steel and Composite Structures” has been established under a new organizational structure. Committee members will not be recruited through an open call; instead, members from industry, government, and academia will be selected and invited by the Executive Committee. Activities are scheduled to begin in April 2025.
